Dr. Ian Bledsoe is a neurologist who cares for patients who have Parkinson’s disease, tremors, ataxia, dystonia and other movement disorders. His treatments include medications, botulinum toxin injections and a surgical procedure called deep brain stimulation.
Dr. Bledsoe has a special interest in dystonia, a disorder that causes involuntary movements, cramps and abnormal postures. He particularly focuses on a form of the condition that affects musicians and other patients whose work requires repetitive movements.
Dr. Bledsoe’s research interests include finding better treatments for dystonia and using neuroimaging – advanced image-producing technologies applied to the nervous system – to improve understanding of what causes the condition. He has also used neuroimaging to study cognitive problems associated with Parkinson’s disease.
Dr.Bledsoe received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then completed a residency in neurology as well as a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and electromyography at Stanford Health Care. At Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, he also completed a fellowship in movement disorders and a master’s degree in clinical research.
Before attending medical school, Dr. Bledsoe earned a bachelor’s degree in violin performance at Northwestern University. He continues to play and perform in his free time.
Dr. Nancy Byl has been a practicing clinician in physical therapy for 56 years. She assumed leadership as Department Chair and participated in academic development, teaching and administration in the UCSF/SFSU Graduate Program in Physical Therapy. As a researcher, she transitioned from animal based models of wound healing and overuse syndromes to clinical research studying the etiology of focal dystonia and the applications of rehabilitation technology and learning based intervention strategies to facilitate recovery of function in patients with focal dystonia, CVA, Parkinson’s Disease and brain trauma.
Working with collaborators in neuroscience, she designed an animal model to study the etiology of focal hand dystonia and created a paradigm shift in the understanding of focal dystonia as a case of neural maladaptation of sensory and motor processing. Using imaging techniques, she demonstrated that learning -based sensorimotor training for patients with focal dystonia improved sensory discrimination, accuracy and modified the topography of the sensory cortex, improving the neuronal firing patterns to be closer to normal. She provides consultations, direct patient care, group exercises and classes of intensive exercise for patients with Parkinson’s and FHD (Focal Hand Dystonia).
Dr. Byl currently serves as a volunteer faculty member in the Osher Learning Center, University of Nevada, Reno and volunteers as a clinician in the Boyd Etter Physical Therapy Practice (PTN) in Reno. In California, she continues to serve on the Education Committee, Chair the Quality Practice Committee and serves as President of the PT Fund.
Dr. Stephanie Greenspan earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California. Her post-graduate training included residencies in orthopedic and neurologic physical therapy and a fellowship in orthopedic manual therapy. She is a board-certified specialist in both orthopedics and neurologic physical therapy.
Her teaching experience includes entry-level and post-professional physical therapy education in the United States as well as in Kenya and Vietnam. She currently teaches in the Samuel Merritt University Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program in Oakland, CA, where she is the principal investigator for ongoing research about injuries in circus artists and also the biomechanics of aerial movement.
Dr. Luc Fecteau started his physical therapy career in Montréal, Canada, working both in private practice and with athletes at Université de Montréal. Looking to broaden his horizons, he joined Cirque du Soleil as a physical therapist, treating an international high performance patient population as supervisor of performance medicine.
After years of practicing with several shows around the globe, Dr. Fecteau settled with his family in California, where he completed a doctorate in physical therapy as well as a fellowship in manual therapy. Dr. Fecteau is passionate about expanding professional knowledge to improve treatment outcomes and is excited to start a new chapter mentoring the next generation of physical therapists at UCSF.
Dr. Fecteau’s treatment approach is based in the three pillars of evidence based practice: current research, clinical expertise, and a patient’s own response and experience, and he believes that the true art of physical therapy lies in appropriately tailoring evidence based practice to specific patient needs.
