Abstract:

This presentation will explore the role of rehabilitation professionals that treat chronic pain. We will discuss the prevalence and physiology of chronic pain, assessment and screening tools for psychosocial factors such as anxiety and depression, evidence-based interventions, and next steps for research, education, and professional development. 

Objectives:

  1. Highlight of the prevalence of chronic pain across different practice settings 
  2. Understand the pathophysiology of persistent pain. 
  3. Discuss evidence-based assessments or screenings for psychosocial factors in the chronic pain population
  4. Evidence based interventions to support clients living with chronic pain
    1. Role of pain neuroscience education (helping patients understand their pain)
    2. Role of psychosocial factors and provider interventions including coping tools, motivational interviewing, self-compassion, CBT and ACT
  5. Discuss future directions for practice and research 

Corinne Cooley, PT, DPT, OCS is a Physical Therapist at the Stanford Pain Management Center, Orthopedic & Sports Rehabilitation Chronic Pain Physical Therapy, in Redwood City, California. She works with pain physicians, pain psychologists, occupational therapists and nursing staff to help optimize complex patient care plans and leads the exercise and movement portion of interdisciplinary outpatient programs. She is faculty of the Stanford Physical Therapy Orthopedic Residency Program, a certified tai chi instructor, and area of research includes psychologically informed rehabilitation.

 

Dr. Van Nuys received her doctorate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Southern California. She completed her clinical residency at Keck Medical Center while focusing on occupational therapy’s role working with survivors of breast cancer across the continuum of care. Dr. Van Nuys has worked at Stanford Health Care as an inpatient occupational therapist and most recently in the outpatient Pain Management Center. She is a certified lymphedema therapist, certified yoga teacher, and passionate about expanding the provision of occupational therapy services to patients living with chronic pain.
