Speaker 1: Corey McGee: Demonstrating our Professional Value: Perspectives on Practice and Research (45 min)

Session objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Relate why it is imperative to demonstrate the value of hand and upper extremity therapy in the current health care context.
  2. Describe three ways the hand and upper extremity therapist can contribute to building an evidence base that demonstrates our professional value.
  3. Describe three strategies to emphasize therapists’ unique professional contributions to hand and upper extremity care.

Speaker 2: Greg Pitts: Developing Trending DASH Scores to Predict Functional Outcomes in a Mass Production Setting.(45 min)

Session Objectives:

  1. To learn how functional outcomes can be applied in a mass production setting.
  2. To understand the benefits of hand therapy and industrial rehabilitation for workers in a mass production setting.
  3. To identify skills necessary to provide productive consultation with an industrial Setting.
  4. To develop strategies demonstrating the cost savings for the use of Hand Therapy for on site rehabilitation and ergonomic activities.

In today’s fast paced industrial setting employers are looking for solutions to complex problems that hand therapist can answer. The hand therapist possesses a unique set of specialized skills in the areas of evaluation, treatment, return to work and ergonomics that allow employers to make important decisions as a relates to production, quality, and safety.

Speaker 1 Bio: Corey McGee, PhD, OTR/L, CHT is an Associate Professor of Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Minnesota. There he studies hand therapy assessments and interventions for persons with hand osteoarthritis, teaches courses in orthotic fabrication, hand therapy practice, and anatomy and kinesiology, mentors PhD and OTD students, and is the academic coordinator for the MHealth-University of MN Hand Therapy Fellowship. Dr. McGee has 22+ combined years of experience as an upper extremity rehabilitation clinician, educator, and researcher. He has been first and coauthor on numerous research
publications and book chapters.

Speaker 2 Bio: Donald “Greg” Pitts, OTD MS, OTR/L, CHT Greg is currently the CEO of Commonwealth Hand and Physical Therapy, Commonwealth Hand Technology, Bluegrass Properties and Commonwealth Hand and Physical Therapy, a National Consultant North Coast Medical Orthotics design, University of Kentucky: Occupational Medicine Advisory Board Faculty, National Consultant Integra nerve graft post-surgery evaluation program, American Hand
